Community Cleanup

Community Clean-Up Day
A Community Cleanup Day in May has become a new tradition here at Konawa Public School. Begun by former high school principal, James Lyons, Cleanup Day has been held every year for over ten years with only two exceptions. In 2006 the event was rained out, and a couple of years before it was canceled due to a conflict with the state softball tournament.

Middle and high school students load onto buses each year with their adviser-group teachers and head out to different areas of the commuity donning latex gloves and toting plastic garbage sacks. Each group picks up all the litter on roadsides and in public areas and deposits them at a collection point. After finishing their task, all students head back to the school for refreshments.

It is hoped that by participating in the community cleanup event, students will become more aware of the litter problem facing our community and become more responsible for depositing their refuse appropriately. The litter problem on our own campus is increasing. By focusing more efforts on keeping our litter barrels emptied in a timely manner and having students participate in periodic campus cleanups, we hope to turn this trend around.
