The Methodist church in Konawa was first organized in 1904. Early meetings were held in the school on East Street. The original Methodist church building was built on Madison Street in 1904. Founding families included: Hammond, Morris, Trobaugh, and Shackelford. Mr. Theo Shackelford was also the first school superintendent and mayor in Konawa.
The first Methodist pastor in Konawa was H. M. Taylor, who began his tenure in 1905. Other early pastors included Wilmore Kendall, W. S. Lee, G. H. McAnally, W. O. Bucy, and E. L. Powell. In 1938 the congregation moved to it's present location on West First Street. The picture shows the church's marquee and original church bell. The church has recently acquired the lot adjacent to the church on the west side and hopes to construct a community center in the near future.
Currently, between sixty and seventy youth are active in the Wednesday night programs. A van was purchased by church members in order to transport youth to the Wednesday meeting and to other events. Methodists are active in many civic events from food drives and disaster relief to education, prevention and intervention of problems related to drug and alcohol abuse.
The youth of the First United Methodist Church go to camp at Cross Point, South of Kingston on Lake Texoma. Presently, the children are meeting Wednesdays at 6:00 p.m. to work on the Christmas play. The United Methodist Conference has a web page.
