Above is a picture of the Pride of Konawa, our 2005-2006 Konawa High School Band. Our band director is Mr. Donny Longest (second row, far right). Devin (back row, far right) is our drum major.
In front of the band is our Konawa Drill Team. To the left of the Drill Team is Melissa Wilson, their sponsor. For more information about the Drill Team go to the Drill Team page.
The band plays in the stands at football games and marches their show at halftime. We also travel to all of the away games.
Every year we host Konawa Band Day. It is held the first Saturday in October. Band Day consists of a parade that is held in downtown Konawa. The bands that march in the parade are judged by three judges. In the afternoon there is a Field Contest. Bands march their shows and are judged. Then after all the bands are finished the judges decide best in class, best auxiliary and so on. We provide trophies and awards that are given to the bands.
After marching season the band starts learning concert music. First we learn Christmas music for our annual Christmas Concert that is held in the auditorium. The Fifth, Sixth, and Seventh grade bands also perform separately the same night.
After Christmas, we begin learning songs for District Band Contest. This is held in the PAC, and is given by the OSSAA (Oklahoma Secondary Schools Activities Association.) Schools from all over the state attend, and are judged on their stage performance and a sight-reading competition held in the gymnastics room. Bands who score 1's in District Contest advance to State Contest, which is held in Stillwater.
After State Contest, we begin learning even more songs that we play at our Spring Concert, held in May. The Elementary and Junior High Bands also perform with us.
In 2000, 2001, 2003, 2004, and 2005, the Konawa Band won a Sweepstakes Trophy. To qualify for this award, you must make straight 1's at Regional Marching Contest, straight 1's at District Concert Contest, and straight 1's at State Contest. We hope to win again this year.
As for individual awards, there were a lot in 2005-06. We had 14 students in the OBU All-Regional Honor Band, 26 in the All-District Honor Band, and 4 high school students in the All-State Honor Band, the highest achievement of its kind in the state. Concert season awards will be updated when complete. Here is a picture of the 2006 All-State band members. Click on it for a larger version.
Next Generation of Band
Konawa has a band program for younger children also. In fifth grade the students start learning simple songs and about their instruments. They dont go to any contests but they join us in our Spring and Christmas concerts. The sixth and seventh grade bands combine and go to a contest held at Arbuckle Wilderness each year and they also compete in the OSSAA District Band Contest. The sixth and seventh grade band also joins us in our Spring, Christmas and Mid-Winter concerts.

For those who are interested, here is some history about the Konawa Band. The first band in Konawa was started in 1905. It was a group of school age boys and three or four adults who knew the basics of music and taught it to the children. H.C. Hoy and Edgar Young were the first directors. The band would go to the railroad station on Saturday evenings and play for all the incoming trains and people who gathered there.Last update December 5, 2005
